As with all good projects, this one started from a wild idea…
An idea about how to build community around beer, a community that supports each other, that can connect in a local, modern gathering place. This idea of a microbrewery and social hall started rolling around in our heads after Kevin started brewing professionally a few years ago, and it has slowly gained momentum. After many discussions and spreadsheets, the moons of Jupiter aligned and this wild idea started to take shape.
Our aim is to keep it simple and sustainable - as we get ready to open our doors, we’re repurposing what’s already on site, sourcing what we need locally or secondhand whenever possible, and supporting other small, local businesses and trades wherever we can. The Howe Beer Project is sited in the middle of one of the UK's major barley producing regions, and we hope to explore ways of building shorter supply chains to bring Fife’s barley straight to our beers.
Our Team
Kevin, Managing Director and Brewer
Kevin is an intense mess of manic productivity, eclectic conversation and flitting hyperfocus. He is the driver of our microbrewery operations and brings a passion for great beer and uncompromising quality. Kevin has 'been around a bit', having qualified in electrical engineering, travelled the globe as an IT engineer and still had time to spend over 20+ years as an arborist before finding his way into professional brewing. He is a lifelong mountaineer and can be found doing sets on the finger board whilst waiting for the sparge to finish, he has rafted the Grand Canyon, proved incompetence is no barrier to Himalayan mountaineering, was ordained, and used to run ridiculous ultra marathons for shits and giggles. A long stint in Colorado impressed upon him the fun and creativity that is to be had in the North American brewery and taproom scene. Having grown up in Fife, this is something that he is keen to share with the Howe.
Julia, Director
She’ll tell you she’s just here for the beer, but she also quite likes crunching numbers, problem solving and putting things in spreadsheets. She has all sorts of wild and enthusiastic ideas for how a small, local social hall and microbrewery could build strong, creative partnerships that support the local economy and the environment. She’s a professional freshwater ecologist and a massive fan of mountains, rivers, bugs, bluegrass music and Americana.
